Google may tap LG for another Nexus phone (I sure hope not)
May 3rd, 2013 | Add a Comment
July 9-10, 2013 San Francisco, CA Early Bird Tickets on Sale After a successful collaboration with the Nexus 4 Android smartphone, Google may also be working with LG for yet another Nexus devices, reports the Korea Times. Let’s be clear: the Korea Times is often wrong, but it would make sense for Google to tap LG’s services again. The Nexus 4 was a solidly built Android phone — and most importantly, Google and LG were able to offer it at a bargain off-contract price of $299. (It’s unclear how much Google subsidized that price, but I’d wager that LG also tried to reduce manufacturing costs as much as it could.) But after spending a few months with the Nexus 4 after its release, its design issues began to grate … Read entire article »

LG starts taking pre-orders for world’s first curved OLED TV to ship
April 29th, 2013 | Add a Comment
After all the money we spent buying flat screen TVs in the past decade, LG is reintroducing the curved TV. This curve, however, is focused on you. Today, LG announced that it is accepting pre-orders for the first curved OLED TVs ever to ship. The LG 55EA9800 is a 55-inch organic-light-emitting-diode TV with a concave curve, not convex like the old tube TVs. In other words, it curves gently towards you, not away from you. The result, LG says, is spectacular. “The entire screen surface is equidistant from the viewer’s eyes, eliminating the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail,” LG said in a press release. The curved screen, which is only .17 inches thick and weighs just 37 pounds, took five years of research and development to create, LG says. And the … Read entire article »

Watch LG Use IPS Displays to Make Men Stop Peeing at a Urinal
April 18th, 2013 | Add a Comment
After pranking elevator passengers to think they were falling with its IPS displays, LG has moved on to trick even more vulnerable suckers: males trying to pee at a urinal. This time, LG put its IPS displays right in front of a urinal and let two attractive women tease the restroom goers. It’s pretty hilarious. More » … Read entire article »

Android up 13%, iOS down 7%, BlackBerry down 81% … and Windows Phone up a massive 52%
April 1st, 2013 | Add a Comment
The mobile operating system market share numbers are in for Kantar Worldpanel’s last quarter, and the numbers are shocking. Not the Android and iOS numbers: Steady but unspectacular growth for Android and gradual but not catastrophic drops for Apple are pretty much in line with expectations. But the BlackBerry and Windows Phone numbers are dramatic changes from the same quarter a year ago. Windows Phone looks to be finally taking off, with 52 percent growth December, January, and February of this year compared to the same three months in 2012. And BlackBerry is falling of a sales cliff, with an 81 percent plunge in sales. Source: Kantar WorldPanel Smartphone sales by operating system – U.S. The big kahuna, of course, is Android. Google’s Android now owns more than half of U.S. smartphone sales, with 51.2 percent market share. … Read entire article »

The view from CES: The top technology trends that will matter in 2013
January 12th, 2013 | Add a Comment
The Consumer Electronics Show is great for revelations of the technology kind. Critics (who don’t go to CES) say you won’t see any innovation at CES. Apple’s absence from the show means that you can dismiss CES exhibitors as a bunch of followers, the critics say. Indeed, you don’t have to go because VentureBeat’s team went and slogged through it all — the Las Vegas lines, the choreographed press briefings, the boring keynotes, the swanky dinners, the giant parties, the booth babes and dudes dressed like superheroes, and the unromantic walks through the equivalent of 37 football fields of booths. We tried not to get distracted by celebrities who rubbed off their coolness on decidedly uncool tech executives. And we focused on scanning the crowds for anything that stood out, the … Read entire article »

Toshiba’s latest flagship TV is big, beautiful, and won’t fit in your living room
January 7th, 2013 | Add a Comment
Japanese electronics giant Toshiba has debuted a new, stunning 84-inch television that will challenge Sony, Samsung, and LG in the high-end 4K TV market. I was able to see the 84-inch L9300 Series Ultra HD 4K LED TV in person at a CES product showcase hosted by Toshiba in Las Vegas. The set did not disappoint in the least. The color reproduction was vivid and sample video looked incredible. 4K Ultra HD TVs go beyond 1080p and show a resolution of 3,840-by-2,160 pixels, so it’s an intense experience. While the TV was impressive, it’s simply absurd to think that it would fit in most living rooms. And on top of that, there is hardly any content being filmed today that can take advantage of the set’s 4K tech. At this point, it’s … Read entire article »

Comscore: Apple tops LG as No. 2 U.S. mobile phone maker
November 30th, 2012 | Add a Comment
While Samsung is still sitting pretty at the top of the U.S. smartphone market, Apple just climbed to the No. 2 spot for the first time, according to the latest data from the research company ComScore. For the three month period from August to October, Apple climbed 1.5 percentage points to reach 17.8 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, toppling LG to third-place. Samsung still maintains a healthy lead with 26.3 percent of the market, after growing by .7 percentage points. But it’s clear that Apple is slowly, but surely, beginning to nip at Samsung’s heels. All of the other top-five mobile vendors, LG, Motorola and HTC, fell in market share — which helped Apple reach that No. 2 spot. And of course, the release of the iPhone 5 in October must have helped … Read entire article »
