MMO gamers and tea drinkers can teach you about engaging with your online community

Elyse Petersen is the founder of Tealet. Tea Drinkers Anonymous is a guild on the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game Guild Wars 2. And no, they are not trying to fight a tea addiction: On the contrary, they brought it online. Its members sip tea as they explore the world of Tyria together. The connection between tea and games could stop there, but it turns out tea connoisseurship relates to gaming personas, as modeled by Richard Bartle. More, these might apply to many other kinds of products and experiences. A model for gamer’s personas While Bartle’s research comes from early MUDs (multiuser dungeons, ancestors of current online games and RPGs), it laid a foundation for the personas of gamers that has been used to describe many other online communities. Other models compete, … Read entire article »

The best MMOs of 2012

Want proof that the massively multiplayer online (MMO) game industry is in a state of extreme flux? Look no further than ostensible World of WarCraft-challenger Star Wars: The Old Republic, which lasted all of seven months before going free-to-play. The times are certainly changing. Profound disruption, however, can have its advantages. More than ever, underdog MMORPGs and other online games are finding niches in which they can survive and thrives for years. Even apparent busts can right the ship with some smart content and a good free-to-play model. With that in mind, here are five great MMOs from 2012. Planetside 2 Welcome to the future. That’s pretty much all we need to say about Sony Online Entertainment’s Planetside 2, which marries a free-to-play model with a full-scale shooter that’s nearly on par with big-budget … Read entire article »

Marvel Heroes needs more humanity, more warmth, and more MMO

I just ran around Hell’s Kitchen with Iron Man. Man, were we faced a lot of muggers and dudes with automatic rifles. Oh, and Electro. Can’t forget him. I fought him for about 15 minutes, grinding his health down to the halfway point, fighting him and waves of annoying muggers, when Iron Man showed up. We kicked Electro’s ass. Then I died, since a mugger snuck up behind me and shot me with an automatic weapon. Waking up on the rooftop of a nearby building, Agent Coulson let me know that there was another crazy evil villain in the subway, Shocker, who I needed to take down. I headed back down the stairs to the streets once more, finding even more muggers and thieves to take down. I threw a car at … Read entire article »

Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes enters open beta

The open beta for Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, a free-to-play game from BioWare Mythic, is now available for download. The new player-vs-player title allows opponents to engage in a variety of fast-paced matches between three teams of six. The experience is inspired by Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, BioWare Mythic’s 2008 massively-multiplayer online game. However, instead of creating and leveling new characters through traditional MMO means (like questing and raiding), gamers can buy new heroes with real money or in-game currency earned while playing, similar to other free-to-play titles like League of Legends. Some heroes start unlocked, so you can play the game without spending anything. You can download the beta at the Wrath of Heroes website. Filed under: games … Read entire article »

THQ lays off 118 people and downsizes ambitions for Warhammer 40K game

Struggling U.S. game publisher THQ said today it was laying off 118 people at two game studios and it had reduced its aspirations for its Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium game. Previously, the licensed Warhammer 40K game was going to be a massively multiplayer online world. Now it will be an “immersive” single-play and online multiplayer game. That’s a huge change, and it shows that THQ didn’t have enough resources to keep the major MMO effort under way while it was watching its spending in the short term. “As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to … Read entire article »

The game within the game: Making mobile gaming work for developers and consumers

2011 was a banner year for mobile gaming. We’re now seeing 60 percent of smartphone users regularly playing games on their devices and surveys indicate that number will only increase. That’s a remarkable achievement considering only 18 percent of gamers played on mobile devices in 2009. Mobile game development has also transitioned, from niche hobby to lucrative profession. While developers continue to push the boundaries of mobile gaming, the industry must consider the business imperatives affecting the evolution of this dynamic marketplace. As it does so, companies will have to address three distinct challenges: Console vs. mobile Technology hurdles that once prevented mobile gaming from rivaling console gaming are gone. Battery life, formerly a huge hurdle for mobile devices, is less of an issue now, although there will always be trade-offs around how … Read entire article »

5.5 million hours spent in Star Wars: The Old Republic over Christmas weekend

Electronic Arts is touting the latest numbers for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and it seemed that lightsaber hums competed hard with the sound of jingle bells. Over the last weekend, 5.5 million hours of potential quality family time were sacrificed for the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire instead, according to the publisher. After a full-week early access period for pre-order customers, the massively multiplayer online (MMO) game launched on December 20th to positive reviews, including an 89 out of 100 score on VentureBeat. The aggregated Metacritic tally currently stands at 88. The marketing efforts for the game also seemed to pay off, as a well-edited promotional video from The Old Republic’s launch day event went viral. “The first ever lightsaber freeze mob duel in the heart of New York’s Times Square” … Read entire article »

Star Wars: The Old Republic reaches 1M registered users in less than a week

Over one million people have registered to play Star Wars: The Old Republic less than one week into the game’s launch, making it the fastest-growing subscription MMO (massively multiplayer online) game in history, according to developer BioWare. “We likely had the largest one-day subscription account registration process in MMO history — over one million people are now registered players of the game, and the number is growing rapidly,” say BioWare co-founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk on the game’s official blog. “As you might imagine, this presented a huge strain on our infrastructure and systems,” they add, ”but the good news is that we seem to be through the worst of it now thanks to folks working hard all day to serve our community.” The developers say they are also working to resolve … Read entire article »
