Apple rushes to calm investors after Greenlight Capital lawsuit
February 7th, 2013 | Add a Comment
Apple has swiftly responded to a lawsuit filed this morning by investor David Einhorn’s hedge fund Green Light Capital, in an attempt to quell further outcry from investors. Einhorn believed Apple was planning to remove preferred shares with a change to its charter, the New York Times reported this morning. But in its statement, Apple denied the preferred share change and said that it would welcome feedback from Greenlight and other investors. “Contrary to Greenlight’s statements, adoption of Proposal #2 would not prevent the issuance of preferred stock,” Apple wrote. Many investors are worried about Apple’s slowing stock performance, after falling more than 26 percent in the last six month, as well as its increasingly large stockpile of cash (now around $137 billion). But Einhorn is the first to publicly take action. Apple’s full … Read entire article »

Uber strikes deal with California regulators to expand into ride-sharing
January 31st, 2013 | Add a Comment
Not to be outdone by its competition, Uber has reached an agreement with the California authorities. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) struck its first deal with popular ride-sharing service Lyft. Twenty-four hours later, the state has also agreed to suspend its $20,000 fine and cease-and-desist action against Uber, the smartphone app that you can use to summon a car instead of hailing a traditional cab. This agreement provides Uber with the breathing room to continue operating its hire-a-car service and expand into the ride-sharing market. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick told the New York Times that the ride-sharing service will be unveiled in California in the coming weeks. In California, Uber operates in San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Sacramento, and a few smaller cities. As part of its official statement to the press, Uber said: The agreement … Read entire article »

Music-minded Myspace accused of using songs without permission
January 21st, 2013 | Add a Comment
Recently revamped social network Myspace is facing accusations that it’s using music from a handful of small independent labels without permission, reports the New York Times. Last week, new Myspace owners Specific Media launched the new version of the site to the public, with help from minority investor Justin Timberlake. Rather than competing with social giants like Facebook and Twitter, the new version of Myspace focuses on cultivating new members interested in both mainstream and underground music groups. The site boasts a music library of 50 million songs — larger than any other online music service available — that is mostly made up of artists on small record labels or without representation. However, digital rights group Merlin, which represents over a thousand independent labels across the globe, said Myspace is using many … Read entire article »

Oracle issues fix for Java exploit after DHS warns of its holes
January 14th, 2013 | Add a Comment
Oracle patched the hole in Java 7 on Sunday that enabled hackers to steal personal information and use your computer to attack other systems. The fix comes only after the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning about the hole, urging people to stop using Java until a fix was made available. Cyber-criminals exploited the vulnerability by using websites infected with malware to access Java and get inside a computer system. Hackers could both infect legitimate websites and set up fake websites that looked legitimate in order to trick people into visiting the site. Once there, the virus would work in the background, secretly infecting the system without the victim’s knowledge. Oracle specifically states that it has changed Java’s security level from medium to high, meaning Java will always ask the user … Read entire article »

CircleUp serves small food producers healthy portions of investment
January 10th, 2013 | Add a Comment
I am a total health-food nerd. I love comparing notes about vegetable-based snacks, and granola sends me into spasms of excitement. The health-food, slow-food, boutique/artisanal/local-food movement is taking off. More and more people nationwide are swapping potato chips for kale chips and awareness about healthy eating practices is not only spreading but also trendy. Today, crowdfunding startup CircleUp announced that it has helped five food-related businesses raise over $5 million. CircleUp combines the popularity surrounding small-production, high-quality products with the momentum of crowdfunding. It is an equity-based platform that enables accredited investors to make direct investments in up-and-coming consumer products businesses. The venture capital community is traditionally hesitant to put money into early consumer products companies, although these types of small businesses make up a significant portion of the economy. CircleUp features companies that … Read entire article »

Instagram founder distorted the truth to expedite Facebook deal
December 17th, 2012 | Add a Comment
Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom played a dicey game of semantics in order to expedite the close of the deal between his company and Facebook, a once billion-dollar deal that was losing value with each passing day. Testifying at a Fairness Hearing at the California Corporations Department in late August, Systrom, according to transcripts obtained by the New York Times, said that his company did not receive “any formal offers or term sheets” immediately preceding negotiations with Facebook. At best, those statements are a distortion of the truth. At worst, they amount to perjury. Facebook declined to comment on Systrom’s testimony at the Fairness Hearing. VentureBeat first broke the news that Twitter presented Instagram with a serious offer in the hundreds of millions of dollars range and a corresponding term sheet while the photo-sharing … Read entire article »

Anonymous targets Israeli websites in response to attacks in Gaza
November 16th, 2012 | Add a Comment
Where political discord exists, Anonymous will be there. The hacktivist group went after Israeli websites last night after the Israeli Defense Forces began live-blogging and tweeting its attack on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Anonymous, which often makes its point by taking down websites, aimed distributed denial of service attacks what it claimed to be 40 Israeli websites, according to the New York Times. A DDOS attack knocks a website offline by sending a rush of traffic to the site’s servers, eventually causing it to overload and collapse. The group posted about its efforts on Pastebin, where Anonymous often announces and updates the public on its attacks, in a post called “OpIsrael.” “Anonymous does not support violence by the IDF or by Palestinian Resistance/Hamas,” the group said in the announcement. “Our concern … Read entire article »

Twitter Is Trying to Be Instagram By Adding Photo Filters By…
November 3rd, 2012 | Add a Comment
Twitter Is Trying to Be Instagram By Adding Photo Filters By Casey Chan Instagram created the photo sharing social network right under the feet of Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Facebook decided to buy it and Twitter is now trying to replicate Instagram by adding photo filters of its own (Flickr is just… sad). The NYT reports that Twitter will “introduce filters for photos that will allow people to share altered images on Twitter” so Twitter users don’t even have to go to Instagram for pictures. It does seem like a ‘too little, too late’ move by Twitter but the act of sharing Instagram pictures on Twitter (which a lot of people do!) is a little awkward. If Twitter could bolster its Twitter photo service (which they should have done from the beginning), maybe people won’t … Read entire article »
