7 apps to help you replace Google Alerts
May 13th, 2013 | Add a Comment
This is a guest post by Yoav Dembak, CEO and co-founder of Colabo, a self-service marketing analytics tool. Google Alerts has long had the reputation of being a simple, user-friendly email alert service for news stories and general web mentions, extracted from a customized search query. As one of Google’s oldest tools, the product has been held to a high standard of reliability and accuracy. Recently, Google has taken the turn for the worst, killing off Google Reader, a valuable RSS tool for a variety of users. Many fear that, given Google Alerts’ recent issues, it will soon be added to the quickly growing list of “Google Graveyarders.” For professional users who are looking to keep track of a product or competitor, Google Alerts’ service has never been ideal. Too often, alerts … Read entire article »

Will trend for low cost chip development bring back the investors?
May 11th, 2013 | Add a Comment
How much does it cost to fund the development of a chip? A few years ago the answer to this question would have been many tens, and probably hundreds of millions of dollars. But things are changing. In recent years the chip industry has gone through one of the biggest booms and busts in its history. And VCs appear to have stopped backing chip startups. I work for a PR agency specializing in electronics, and we’re seeing a new trend that might change this. As noted in VentureBeat, the global chip industry is the bedrock of the $1 trillion electronics industry. Its pace of innovation is punishing, with new chip factories costing as much as $4 billion to build now. Every two years, chip makers have to invent entirely new processes to … Read entire article »

Here we go again: 5 reasons hiring a good PR firm is smart business
May 10th, 2013 | Add a Comment
This is a guest post by Patrick Ward, CEO and founder of PR firm 104 West. I feel like I have this same argument at least twice a year when a disgruntled entrepreneur lambastes PR agencies. And I am invariably bemused when I dig deeper only to find the complainer has poured a bunch of negative experiences into a collective bucket and thrown the PR industry baby out with his or her personal bathwater. So, following Kevin Leu’s recent post on “5 reasons you’ll regret hiring a PR firm for your startup,” here I go again, but this time I’ll mirror his points with my own five reasons you won’t regret hiring a good PR firm for your startup. 1. They will keep your story honest I have always been a PR agency guy and … Read entire article »

How to make the leap from building apps to building a business
March 27th, 2013 | Add a Comment
Robin Thurston is CEO of MapMyFitness You’ve already beaten the odds — your app is successfully gaining adoption. But now a more difficult challenge looms: You need to parlay that app success into a viable business. A successful apps-based business will demand many of the easy-to-overlook (but crucial) conventional business functions that go beyond pure app development and software maintenance such as customer service, PR and marketing, finance, operations, etc. But let’s put those things aside for a moment and focus in on the biggest single challenge facing the developer of a successful app: Generating a sustainable revenue base from which to grow a business. Here are three ways to do that: #1 – Paid apps Paid apps are an indispensable component to any revenue-generating efforts in the current app store environments. Any developer offering … Read entire article »

How not to do PR, 101: BlackBerry exec absolutely refuses to acknowledge iPhone’s existence
January 30th, 2013 | Add a Comment
The British are such beautiful bastards. It’s one thing to be a company man. Or to toe the company line, parrot the company’s talking points, and be a staunch defender of your team. It’s another to be a bloody idiot and refuse to even acknowledge that the rest of the world exists. Like BlackBerry exec Stephen Bates in chat with the BBC. But the BBC interviewer pursues him doggedly, and it’s wonderful — at least for us. It’s embarrassing, so say the least, for BlackBerry corporately, and for Bates personally. Here’s the interview (transcript below): BBC interviewer: What have you learned from Apple? So BlackBerry is a unique proposition … we’ve got round about 17-18 million customers who love the BlackBerry experience so we’re taking the essence of that BlackBerry experience and moving it forward.” BBC interviewer: Have … Read entire article »

Egnyte CEO says: IT should get physical with their cloud provider (video)
December 15th, 2012 | Add a Comment
For most cloud providers, the biggest PR problem is security. Egnyte CEO Vineet Jain has invested years into understanding — and alleviating — commons concerns about the cloud. If the enterprise-focused cloud storage startup is to continue luring customers away from heavyweights like Box and Zetta, it will be due to its commitment to security. I caught up with Jain at VentureBeat’s CloudBeat 2012 to discuss the questions that companies should ask their cloud providers before entering into a contractual agreement. Considering migrating sensitive information to the cloud? Jain suggests that IT ask about a vendor’s ability to deal with encrypted data, and their understanding of industry-specific compliance laws. If the vendor passes these tests, Jain recommends delving into where the data is stored. Recently, an Egnyte customer flew in an IT director from Pittsburgh, PA. … Read entire article »

The most unbelievable iPhone case ever (gallery)
December 12th, 2012 | Add a Comment
What happens when you cross a Leatherman, a bike repair tool, and an iPhone case? If a crowd-funded project on Indiegogo succeeds, you’ll get the TaskOne, from a small Atlanta-based outfit called TaskLab. The TaskOne is an iPhone case with a bunch of tools attached to it: A knife, screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, spoke wrenches, wire stripper, ruler, and of course, a bottle opener. “We developed this case over the last 6 months out of a desire to have a small set of tools with us at all times,” TaskLab founder Addison Shelton said in an email to VentureBeat. “Leathermans were too bulky and we weren’t going to carry one on our belt, but we wanted a significant tool to use for small bike and household repairs.” I’ve seen iPhone cases with bottle openers … Read entire article »

Apple’s bringing some manufacturing back to the U.S. But is it just a stunt?
December 7th, 2012 | Add a Comment
Apple is spending $100 million bringing some Mac manufacturing back to the U.S, CEO Tim Cook said today in an interview. That sounds like good news to those who are worried about the decline of U.S. manufacturing. But to others, it’s just a PR stunt with limited real value. One of them is SumOfUs, a corporate watchdog group that describes itself as “fighting for people over profits.” “Apple has a track record of announcing changes in its supply chain as PR stunts,” the organization’s founder and executive director Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman said. “Apple has spent $650 million just on advertising for the iPhone alone since it launched. They’re talking about spending less than 20% of that on this shift. They’re talking about moving 1/10th of 1 percent of their global production costs.” There’s no question that … Read entire article »
