Solar power, white spaces bring 16Mbps broadband to towns without electricity

Microsoft White space networks haven’t exactly revolutionized Internet access in the US, but that doesn’t mean the technology can’t have a major impact in countries that lack consistent access to the Internet. The latest project showing the power of white spaces is unfolding in Kenya, where a solar-powered network is bringing the Internet to people who aren’t even connected to an electric grid. Microsoft deployed the network last month in conjunction with Kenyan government officials. It is serving a health care clinic in Burguret, a primary and secondary school in Male (that’s pronounced “mah-lay”), a secondary school in Gakawa, and a library in Laikipia. The network will be expanded to 20 locations in the coming months. “Down in the valley, nobody has electricity,” Paul Garnett, director of … Read entire article »

More addresses please—US hits a half-billion Internet devices

Market research firm NPD Group has published a report that finds there are now more than 500 million devices in US homes that connect to the Internet.  And for the first time, smartphones and tablets outnumber PCs in that tally. NPD’s Connected Intelligence report found that households now have an average of 5.7 devices (up from 5.3 just 3 months ago). That mushrooming cloud of bandwidth-demanding devices has been driven by the red hot tablet market—there are now tablet devices in 53 percent of homes in the US, up from 35 percent in December. Smartphones also have edged into 9 million more pockets over the last three months, according to NPD, and they now account for 57 percent of cell phones in the US market. Calling it the “post-PC” era may be … Read entire article »

New map shows how the Internet will travel underwater in 2013

A map of the world and the cables that keep us connected. Telegeography TeleGeography released a 2013 version of its Submarine Cable Map on Thursday showing the 232 cables that ferry telecommunications under water between countries. The mapmakers note the rendering serves as a rough estimator for overall demand for connectivity between places, and that cables to a location mean bandwidth there is generally faster and cheaper than places that must communicate via satellite. In addition to mapping the locations of the cables, the map shows a chart detailing the names and connectivity of all the cables installed between 1992 and 2012. For instance, the Challenger-Bermuda 1, built by Alcatel-Lucent in 2008, connects the US to Bermuda and had an initial capacity of 20 Gigabits per second, … Read entire article »

Cox Enterprises creates The 250 Million Dollar Man

If someone invested a quarter of a billion dollars in my entrepreneurial vision, the world would have a lot more ice cream parlors, unicorn zoos, and planes with furry seats and disco balls. Alas, no-one has chosen to do this. Yet. Cox Enterprises, however, is investing $250 million in one man, placing a massive bet on his ability to create successful companies. The media conglomerate has entered into an exclusive partnership with serial entrepreneur Tripp Rackley to back any startups that Rackley wants to found. Rackley is a well-known figure within the Atlanta technology community. He successfully started and sold two companies to Intuit and Qualcomm, and claims to have created more than $1 billion in shareholder value and more than 500 jobs in Georgia. He joined the Cox Enterprises board a … Read entire article »

Satellite Internet: 15Mbps, no matter where you live in the US

billrdio America is a land of haves and have-nots when it comes to broadband Internet. While many of us enjoy downloads speeds of 50 or even 100 Mbps, 119 million Americans lack broadband access (defined as 4Mbps down and 1Mbps up). Out of those 119 million, 19 million live in areas where there is no option to buy a wired broadband connection, according to government data. Wouldn’t it be great if we could provide broadband speed to nearly every American, without costly construction projects to bring cables to the home? Apparently, we already can. At least that’s what providers of satellite broadband Internet services said today in a panel at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Latest-generation satellites operated by HughesNet and ViaSat offer 10 to … Read entire article »

Why the Google+ long game is brilliant

I’m finding myself using Google+ more and more. I recently decided that the long game Google is playing is absolutely brilliant. They are being understated about it but doing exactly what business strategists talk about when they describe the long game as the one to play. Rather than making a bunch of sweeping pronouncements, struggling to jam together a bunch of random crap in a big bang release, and then worry about staying involved in a feature race with a competitor, Google is continually experimenting with new functionality, rolling it out broadly in a fully integrated fashion on a continuous basis, and providing it as a core part of an ever expanding thing that is getting more and more useful by the week. By now I hope you are saying, “What the … Read entire article »
